The Penn State Food Science Building houses the famous Penn State Creamery. IKM Incorporated was commissioned to design the new building to provide the state-of-te-art facilities that would allow the University’s College of Agricultural Sciences to remain current with researchers in the food science departments in the Big Ten Conference and the Northeast. Food Science programs include research, teaching, and outreach activities. The disciplines of primary importance arechemistry, microbiology, engineering, and nutrition. This unique building combines manufacturing, retail sales, academic teaching and research under a single roof.
IKM was selected to design the two-phase renovation of the 36,000 square foot, two story, 1970s-era Fisher Hall Science Building on the Bradford Campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Phase I renovations included Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology teaching laboratories. This work also included code and ADA upgrades of the entire building encompassing revisions to the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
IKM was selected to provide architectural design and laboratory planning and design services for the renovation of several lab facilities at Carnegie Mellon University’s historic Mellon Institute. In an effort to upgrade the lab facilities, CMU had completed a master plan for the building to maintain its historical structure while providing state of the art research facilities while incorporating LABS21 concepts into the design for students and faculty. Individual projects were completed based on funding and need.
The new Advanced Technology and Science Hall at Slippery Rock University is a 76,000 square foot building with two front doors. Uniquely located at the southern entrance to campus the building faces the public road on one side and the campus quad on the other. The public side presents a circular drive; a formal entrance that announces arrival at the University campus. The other respects the ever present foot traffic patterns established by hurried students as they make their way among campus buildings traveling from class to class.
IKM was selected by the Department of General Services to design the new Health Services Building to house classrooms and faculty office space for the Physician’s Assistant program at the Clearfield Campus of Lock Haven University. This project will be the third building on the new campus for Lock Haven and is the second to be designed by IKM.
West Virginia University retained the IKM team to design the complete interior renovations of the 96,000+ square feet to accommodate the relocation of the Department of Physics. This included the design of teaching and research laboratory space.
