The St. Clair Hospital Outpatient Center is a 40,000 sq.ft, 2 story medical facility in Peters Township in a  heavily travelled suburban location. This project seeks to deviate from the area’s standard development norm and focuses upon creating a superior patient experience from the moment the building comes into view. The 3.4 acre site was developed with the building and not the parking utilizing the prominent street frontage of Washington Road. The parking is then placed towards the rear of the site.  The building was rotated perpendicular to the primary frontage in order to maximize a southern exposure, allowing natural light to bathe the waiting spaces.  These approaches are unique to the Route 19 corridor and present the branding and building identity opportunities valued by the hospital as they expand their care network throughout the South Hills.

The hospital’s main campus features buildings with ribbon windows, buff brick, precast concrete panels and copper colored metal panel.  For this  building, the initial development outside of their main campus, the design team abstracted that palette by using a copper colored brick, a neutral toned metal panel with a charcoal colored base material.  Edge lit polycarbonate panels on the monument sign identify the entrance to the site, and the same illuminated panels are prominently featured on the pier supporting the porte-cochere roof at the covered patient drop-off. Ease of building identification and location of access points are key to translating a positive interaction with the building.

On the first floor, the building features a comprehensive diagnostic center with state of the art imaging equipment. The customer flows effortlessly into that center through subtle cues in the flooring material and ceiling forms. A monumental stair connects the two floors and provides a strong visual anchor and touchpoint for the building users.

The second floor is populated by multiple practice spaces helping the Owner create a single point of care by co-locating practice and diagnostic spaces. The practice spaces take advantage of elevated views as positive distractions for exam rooms and staff respite areas.

The St. Clair Hospital Outpatient Center is a symbol to this institution’s commitment to providing cutting edge healthcare in a high quality facility that is convenient and easily accessible to the target consumer population.
