Indiana Musculoskeletal Institute & Center for Orthopedic Sports Medicine
- Indiana, Pennsylvania

- $9.2M Project Value
An entrepreneurial group of five orthopedic surgeons sought a design firm that would capture their vision for a new facility that exuded the feelings of individualized specialty care, integrating the latest medical technology for treatment.
Designed in purposeful contrast to the traditional red-brick buildings that comprise the community, the zinc shingles selected for the exterior of this medical office building immediately set a confident tone for the quality of care that occurs here. Exposed building systems and structure reflect the skeleton of the building working in harmony with the design, congruent with the treatment of orthopedic issues. The vibrant yellow exterior distinctively identifies the facility’s entrance and announces that this place is welcoming and contemporary.
The clerestory windows flood the interior public waiting and group treatment spaces with daylight while the punched window openings provide views of the rural setting with a degree of privacy for the patient exam spaces inside. Warm earthen colors with bright accent walls and a mix of fabrics were combined with polished concrete floors and neutral carpeting to continue the contemporary but welcoming design on the inside.
As this project advanced, Indiana Regional Medical Center became a participant in changing and expanding the scope of the project. In addition to orthopedic care, the outpatient medical office building includes a physical therapy center, and imaging suite with MRI, and a pain and spine center.
This project was always meant to be a place for access to comprehensive care for pain and mobility. Patients receiving new knees and hips want their treatment to include the application of the latest medical technology. This building’s design evokes the sense that this is the access point for such care. The Indiana Musculoskeletal Institute has become a place where the community can easily access advanced muscle, bone, and joint treatments.
