Salk Hall Renovations
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Completed 2017
- Renovation
- 3,000 square feet
IKM was selected through a competitive bidding process to provide programming, space planning, documentation, interior design, and construction administration services for the renovation of the 5th and partial 6th floors of the Salk Hall building on Pitt’s Oakland Campus.
The project required the relocation of an existing laboratory on the 5th floor and renovation of the space to create a dynamic, innovative, and creative learning center. The design of the nearly 3,000 square feet of space sought a departure from the traditional ‘eyes-forward’ configuration to a more flexible, collaborative learning environment. The updated facility responds to the changing educational paradigm by facilitating not only positive teacher/student relationships but student/student interactions as well.
The 6th floor is intended to be a computational floor with program elements inspired by the playful and open designs found at major tech companies such as Google, Apple, or Microsoft. Classrooms will accommodate virtual reality settings with seating for 35-50 students. In addition, conference rooms are designed for workshops and seminars.
