Pittsburgh Public Schools (Various)
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Various Project Types
For the past 25 years, IKM has had a continuous series of projects for the Pittsburgh Public Schools ranging in scope from the new Southbrook Middle School and a major addition to the Colfax Elementary School, to multiple face-lift and infrastructure improvements packages at over 35 of the District properties.
Colfax School Elementary Addition & Renovations
The School Board approved the conversion of the school from a K-5 to a K-8 Elementary School. The addition proposed and designed includes a High School regulation-sized gymnasium, a cafeteria, eight full-sized classrooms, a science classroom, four small group instruction rooms, and an instrumental music room.
To preserve the on-site bus drop-off lane, the addition is connected to the existing building via a second story pedestrian walkway that gently arches and spans 60 feet across the driveway. The addition’s design incorporates the massing and materials palette of the original building, while standing distinctly as a new structure through the use of contemporary detailing. The roofing for the new addition is a hybrid system of both single ply EDPM membrane for the flat areas supporting mechanical equipment and standing seam metal roof for the larger expanse over the gymnasium. The roof design carefully terminates the standing seam roof over dense rubber splash blocks on the EPDM portions.
Perry High School Renovations
IKM was also asked to look at various options for Perry High School including an addition of a parking deck above the existing surface parking lot.
While the deck was not built, the remainder of the project provided a combination of energy and finish upgrades for the school including new flooring throughout to liven up the 80-year-old sealed concrete floors; a refreshed painting scheme; new finishes and fixture in the toilet rooms; new ceilings and lighting on daylight sensors; upgrades to the boilers and controls; repairs to the main make-up fan units; and new program space for Health Careers and Junior ROTC programs.
