In response to growing demand as a Level Two Trauma Center coupled with changes in business structure and catchment area, Forbes Hospital required a Perioperative Services Center that better accommodates staff needs, patient experience, and circulation throughout the facility. The Perioperative Services project addressed inefficiencies as a result of this rapid growth. The updated center includes an updated GI Lab, Central Sterile Processing, a post-anesthesia care unit, an electrophysiology lab, a hybrid OR, a staff lounge, and a staff locker room.

GI services are being integrated into the hospital’s ambulatory surgical services in order to consolidate activities including registration, family and staff lounges, and utility functions. As a result of these shared spaces, pre-/post-procedure spaces will operate more economically.

Central sterile processing is also replaced with more efficient equipment in a new location that allows for a clear linear flow from dirty to clean. The new location of the department is positioned for external receiving and transport to the surgery department.

The new EP lab is adjacent to the catheterization labs so that the pre-/post-procedure spaces can be shared as well as other support functions. The new location will also allow the EP lab to be accessed directly from the restricted surgery department corridor, reducing the risk of infection.
