Krystal Biotech is a cutting-edge organization that is developing and providing innovative corrective gene therapies to improve people’s lives. They pride themselves on providing all stages of the manufacturing and research process in-house. They are consistently striving to advance their process and are looking to expand on their current lab functions, as well as provide a space for future evolution, expansion, and growth. Due to the company’s rapid growth, the need for a central lab area to allow for the testing of future lab processes led to the expansion and renovation of this new lab space.
This project allows Krystal Biotech to have flexibility in the continuous improvement of their quality control process. The design team studied the workflows and desired adjacencies to come up with an arrangement that fits all the processes, while enhancing safety and maintaining required separation between distinct laboratory functions. This lab space is intended as a testing area for quality control and larger scale processes to come, and careful consideration was given to all the adjacencies of functions and how they may need to be adapted in the future.
The ceiling heights in the existing warehouse facility make the project particularly challenging with the inclusion of nine Biosafety cabinets and two fume hoods. A liquid nitrogen system to support the ultra-low freezers required for lab functions is also included. Careful attention is given to coordination of overhead services to allow for the required engineering of the space, while providing an open feel to the laboratories and designing for employee comfort. The thoughtful organization of the space reduces strain on workers and provides more opportunity for continued collaboration.
