IKM was selected to design the nearly 9,000 square foot Gamma Knife addition to the Oakwood Center. The first floor of the addition houses the Gamma Knife instrument, one of the most precise radiosurgical devices physicians are using to battle cancer tumors in the brain. The instrument enables very precise surgical changes to be made within the brain without the risks of conventional surgery or radiation therapy. The first floor also includes the main reception area, exam rooms, physicians’ and nursing offices, recovery area, and appropriate support spaces.
Located in a serene wooded setting, the two-story addition takes advantage of the natural views with large windows in the waiting area and patient resource center. The second floor includes exam and procedure rooms primarily for the treatment of patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. It also includes space for biopsy & stereo-tactic surgery, recovery, digital mammography, physicians’ offices, and appropriate support spaces such as medical records, storage and utility.
