St. Clair Hospital
Peters Township Outpatient Center

The St. Clair Hospital Outpatient Center is a 40,000 square foot, two-story medical facility in the Peters Township suburb of Pittsburgh. This area is a heavily travelled suburban location. This project seeks to deviate from the area’s standard development norm and focuses upon creating a superior patient experience from the moment the building comes into view. The 3.4 acre site was developed with the building utilizing the prominent street frontage of Washington Road. The parking is then placed towards the rear of the site. The building was rotated perpendicular to the primary frontage in order to maximize southern exposure and permit natural light to bathe the waiting spaces. These approaches are unique to the Route 19 corridor and present the branding and building identity opportunities valued by the hospital as they expand their care network throughout the South Hills.

The hospital’s main campus features buildings with ribbon windows, buff brick, precast concrete panels, and copper colored metal panel. For this building, the initial development outside of their main campus, the design team abstracted that palette by using a copper colored brick, a neutral toned metal panel with a charcoal colored base material. Edge lit polycarbonate panels on the monument sign identify the entrance to the site, and the same illuminated panels are prominently featured on the pier supporting the porte-cochere roof at the covered patient drop-off. Ease of building identification and location of access points are keys to translating a positive interaction with the building.
