IKM was retained to renovate the sixth and seventh floors of E & F Buildings on the UPMC Mercy Hospital campus in support of a planned Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center of Excellence initiative at UPMC.

IKM created a public circulation path to divert unrelated pedestrian traffic around the new unit. The unit provided dedicated spaces for stroke therapy, a brain injury unit, and a general rehabilitation unit within the rehabilitation center.

The units are a mixture of existing inpatient rooms and new rooms designed to meet census demands. A decentralized nursing model incorporates nurse workstations adjacent to pods of patient rooms to improve patient observation and nursing response times.

Additionally, some of the core areas to support the new unit have been reconfigured and dining/lounge and therapy/gym space are located on each floor as part of the unit. This design supports current therapy models encouraging patients’ regular and ongoing therapy in activities of daily living. As a result of bringing the nursing and therapy activities together, a more cohesive treatment team is anticipated.
