IKM Architecture Celebrates Jonathan Lusin’s Appointment as President of AIA Cleveland

IKM Architecture (IKM) proudly celebrates the appointment of Jonathan M. Lusin as President of AIA Cleveland. As Principal at IKM, Jon’s leadership, vision, and dedication to both architecture and the broader community make him an exceptional choice to guide AIA Cleveland into the future.

Jon’s journey to this leadership role was one of service rather than direct pursuit. As Jon’s involvement with AIA Cleveland deepened, it became clear that his leadership reflected the same principles he upholds at IKM Architecture – championing collaboration, advocating for architects, and ensuring the profession remains actively engaged in shaping the built environment. Reflecting on his appointment, he shared:

“I didn’t necessarily pursue the role – it found me. My engagement with AIA Cleveland started through attending events and discussions with members. I was invited to join the board first as Vice President, and from there, my involvement grew.”

We sat down with Jon to discuss his vision for AIA Cleveland and what he hopes to achieve during his tenure.

Q&A with Jonathan Lusin

Q: Can you share some specific initiatives AIA Cleveland will be focusing on?
A: Absolutely. We’ve identified five core areas:

  1. Enhancing Member Value & Events – Improving the quality and accessibility of our programming.
  2. Reevaluating the Chapter Office – Reimagining what our physical space should be for our chapter and membership.
  3. Organizational Structure & Staffing – Exploring operational adjustments that will streamline our member services and enhance member satisfaction.
  4. Strengthening Advocacy Efforts – Ensuring architects play a more active role in community and policy discussions.
  5. Optimizing Board Operations – Streamlining our leadership structure to be more effective.

Q: What are your main priorities for AIA Cleveland during your term?
A: My focus is on two key areas: membership value and advocacy. Members often ask, “What value do I get from my AIA membership?” I want to ensure we’re providing clear, tangible benefits. Advocacy is another priority – architects should have a voice in shaping Northeast Ohio’s development and policies affecting the built environment.

Q: How does AIA Cleveland collaborate with AIA Ohio and AIA National?
A: It’s a layered relationship. AIA National focuses on broad policy and industry-wide issues, while AIA Ohio handles state-level advocacy. Our chapter is the local touchpoint for members, making direct impacts in Cleveland and the surrounding region. Collaboration between all levels ensures we address both large-scale challenges and local needs effectively.

Q: What challenges do you anticipate?
A: Change is always a challenge. We have a well-established board, but making structural adjustments can be difficult. However, I see an opportunity to align our structure with our mission and create more impactful programs.

Q: What role do architects play in economic development and public policy?
A: Architects should be at the table when major projects and policy decisions are made. Whether it’s a new airport, urban redevelopment, or sustainability initiatives, our expertise is critical. AIA Cleveland must work to get architects more engaged in these discussions.

Q: Are there emerging trends or initiatives you’d like to champion?
A: I’d love to see more architects taking leadership roles outside traditional firm structures. We have AIA members who are mayors, city planners, and policymakers. Encouraging architects to step into these roles will broaden our influence. Additionally, I want to support entrepreneurship within the profession, helping young professionals access capital and mentorship to start their own firms.

Q: How do you see your role aligning with IKM’s long-term vision?
A: At IKM, we emphasize making a difference, not just in project work but in the community. My leadership at AIA Cleveland reflects that commitment – expanding our influence and fostering growth in Northeast Ohio’s architectural landscape.

Q: What does success look like at the end of your term?
A: Success is laying a strong foundation for the future. While we may not see immediate, tangible results, this year is about setting the groundwork for long-term growth and engagement. If we create a more connected, impactful AIA Cleveland, we’ll have done our job well.

Q: Any final thoughts?
A: This is a role of service as much as leadership. Listening is just as important as leading. I want to make sure we’re truly addressing our members’ needs and positioning AIA Cleveland for long-term success.

IKM Architecture is incredibly proud of Jon’s dedication and leadership. We look forward to seeing the lasting impact he will have on AIA Cleveland and the architectural community at large. Congratulations, Jon!
