In 1911, IKM’s founders Charles T. Ingham  and William Boyd began their practice in downtown Pittsburgh and provided the City with architectural services seeking the highest level of design excellence. They built the practice on strong client relationships which includes notable commissions such as Chatham Village, Buhl Planetarium and the Pittsburgh Board of Education Administration Building among the firm’s early significant work.

Today, IKM’s mission continues that pursuit of design excellence and strong client relationships by creating innovative and informed architecture that positively impacts the world through leadership in understanding, exploration and decision making.

In 2011, in the evolving marketplace for professional design services, IKM applies creativity, innovation, advanced technology, sustainable design and exceptional service to projects large and small. This mission and philosophy were put to use for the successful completion of many recent, notable IKM projects including: Phipps Conservatory Welcome Center and Tropical Forest additions; the conversion of the Allegheny County Jail for Family Courts; design of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, West Virginia University Alumni Center, and the Penn State Food Science Building.

Reflecting on the firm’s history, IKM’s president John Schrott stated, “IKM is fortunate to have had over the continuum of our practice the opportunity to serve a group of exceptional clients. We recognize and deeply value the trust clients place in us with each project. We understand and embrace that our work positively impacts their daily lives; their ability to carry out their mission and supports their ability to make a difference in our community”

IKM provides professional design services to healthcare, higher education, corporate and civic clients. Visit the IKM website, www.ikminc.com/history  to read more about the firm’s history, check out the interactive timeline, and to view a sample portfolio of their work.
